turn turn turn

I was so sorry to see that more journalists have been killed in Iraq.

Sorry and saddened, though not surprised. Not, at least, until I came to this part of the article:

"The terrorists who committed this evil crime have shown themselves for who they are. They do not want the world to see the truth of what is happening in Iraq, where a determined people are fighting for freedom and liberty. That story must and will be told."

OK, so the Colonial Militias were just resisting unjust rule, the French Resistance used guerrilla tactics righteously in their fight against the Nazi occupation of their country, but Iraqi insurgents are terrorists for fighting "freedom and liberty"-loving American soldiers?

Just when I forget how pervasive the ignorance and spin are, I come across this kind of stuff.

Bah to Victors' History. Bah to those gullible enough to swallow it with a smile.

I don't see how your analogy fits. The ambasador's statement criticizes criminals who murdered the very people (journalists) who have the ability to represent their views in media. At least that is my reading of it. Are you saying that the Continental Army and the French Resistance also murdered journalists?

You appear to believe the United States presence in Iraq is on the level of the British Empire claiming the colonies or the German occupation of France. It would seem to me that if the occupying militaries left Iraq there would be even less civility due to decreased police-like personnel. What would you suggest instead?

Also, it is not victor's history until someone has one. At this point it is just spin or propaganda.

What is your solution?

First of all, the journalists were not targeted because they were members of the media. They were killed by a roadside bomb that was directed at the military division they were embedded with. I doubt that the insurgents who set the bomb called ahead to determine whether journalists would be among those coming down the street.

If anything, your anger should be directed at Pentagon policy which requires permitted journalists to travel along with troops, not seperately in a way which would make it more obvious that they are independent media.

Invasion and control for profit is exploitation whatever the scenario. I think that we have no way of actually knowing if the fledgling Iraqi government can control the country themselves, as the US military and occupying powers have no intention of allowing them any actual power or letting them try.

Solutions? Sorry. I'm just a mom, after all; complaining is my forte.
